Audience Website Feedback (NEW)
When we got our audiencefeedback we used Facebook as it quick, easy and is very popular with our target audience. From our research we found that people wanted to watch our show after looking at the website. They particularly liked the text and images as they anchoraged a young audience, while the pop art style photos created a fun atmosphere. Also, they said that the cast videos allowed them to get access to behind the scenes in a fun way.

Evaluation (NEW)
How successful were your products? Did you full fill the intentions set out at the beginning of the assignment?
I feel that both of our production and website are very successful. Our intention was to create fun, light hearted, simple products that were conventional to E4 and attracted our audience of 15-30. We intended that our website would look attractive and appealing to our target audience and would be simple to navigate around, however would still contain enough information and images to keep the audience entertained. When creating our production, we made sure we had create both storyboards and shot lists completed before filming to save time when filming shots, this then allowed us to change shots if they did not look effective. We intended to stick to the sitcom conventions throughout our production, by making sure our narrative was funny, contained some humorous stereotypes and centres around one character.
What kind of institutional context did the productions fit into?
The E4 website explains that they are a company that "is the destination for a cutting edge young audience" with an "eccentric and witty" personality. It also states they have many Facebook appreciation groups for their shows, suggesting that alot of their audience is targeted through social networking sites. Due to this we then decided to create a Facebook and Twitter page for our show as it should attract more viewers within our target audience. E4 then researched into what their target audience contains as found that their audience are young, upmarket, fashion conscious, sociable connected, heavy internet users, they love going out and tend to use advertising as one of their main information sources. As we are targeting the same demographic as E4, we released our programme to both YouTube and Facebook as they are great places to connect with our audience and are easy to get written yet simple feedback.

How well did you target your audience?
When researching into the sitcoms in which are target audience enjoy, we looked on IMBD at the most advertised sitcoms and their viewing figures with demographic statistics. From this we found that both the IT Crowd and The Inbetweenrs had a target of audience of both male and females between 15-30. We then constructed a survey asking questions about their favourite sitcoms what they like and dislike and what narratives and characters they like. This the helped us when creating our own sitcom as it allowed us to see what our demographic want in a sitcom. We also conducted a focus group, which stated what attracts our audience to a sitcom and we found that the most popular results were the humour and characters I felt that it was quite significant that both the focus group and survey stated that the most popular character was a geek. WE then therefore had our main character as a geek. Also, when creating our website, we instantly took the younger and more fun audience in to mind, as we would have to make it look attractive, appealing and relatable to their lives. WE felt that this idea was presented well in our cast video as by asking embarrassing questions, we create humour for the audience other than just listing the questions and answers on the page. The video makes the viewing experience alot more fun, and allows you to learn more about the cast in a fun way. Also, by including young language, pop art style photos and school images, we can help create a younger atmosphere, creating a fun and vibrant mood. This could then help attract a younger audience.
What genre were you working in and how was this apparent to your audience?
When looking at our design brief we had to choose between three different genres of television "structured reality", "fly on the wall documentaries" and "fictional productions". My group decided to chose "fictional productions" under the Situation Comedy genre. We firstly began to research into E4 sitcoms such as The Inbetweeners and The IT Crowd by researching into their viewing figures, their demographic and psychographic audience and by also analysing them ourselves. As we were creating a sitcom in the style of E4 we decided to take the audience demographic of the most popular sitcoms when we conducted our survey in Primary Audience Research. This then allowed us to look at the codes and conventions of the sitcoms which would then benefit us when creating our own. We looked at the representation, narrative, Mise en Scene, camera shots and movement within the E4 sitcoms to look at the links between them all. This would then allow us to understand the different codes and conventions within E4 sitcoms. Once we had understood the different codes and conventions we completed a survey asking what our audience would like in a sitcom with possible narratives, characters and locations. This then allowed our audience to take part is choosing what our sitcom involves, which will then meet the codes and conventions in the other sitcoms.
When creating our website we then used the websites of the E4 sitcoms we researched when creating our production, to gather the codes and conventions from the same demographic and psychographic audience. We looked at colours, anchorage, pages and images to achieve a conventional website which would still fit in with the 15-30 target audience. As our genre for the production was a sitcom we then used comedic images and anchorage to achieve a younger audience, which E4 sitcoms have.
How successful were each of your products in communicating their key ideas and concepts?
When creating our production as we were creating our sitcom we began to look into the codes and conventions of E4 sitcoms which had the same demographic and psychographic audience of 15-30. Firstly, we created audience research into our demographic by asking our audience questions on their favourite sitcoms and what they would like in a new sitcom with characters, narratives and locations, as well as what they like and dislike about some sitcoms. By then looking at the results of the survey we found that the Inbteweenrs was one of the most popular E4 sitcoms. When researching the sitcoms we looked into their narrative, characters, locations, mise en scene, camera shots and movement, representation and semiotics and found the links between the shows to work out the typical codes and conventions presented. When researching into the sitcoms I looked at the institutional context of E4 it self and created a semiotic analysis of the logo. I found that E4 is the fun and light hearted subsidiary of Channel 4, which is then also emphasised through the logo as the bubble style writing suggests a fun and young vibe. This young vibe is then conventional to E4 sitcoms and then therefore I had to include these conventions in my production.
When creating our production I looked into the conventions that we found and began to create storyboards and costume designs with our chosen characters. In particular the costume designs allowed us to look into the stereotypes shown through the characters in sitcoms. As our main character is a "geek" we looked into The Inbetweeners character "Will", to look at the ways in which the character of the "geek" is shown. This then allowed us to create a more conventional and stereotypical character, which then allows for the audience to relate to the character more. Also, when looking at other sitcoms, I found that the narrative what from the perspective if one character We then decided to use this convention in our sitcom to made it conventional to the E4 sitcom.
After completing our draft production we then received audience feedback after posting the video to "Facebook", allowing us to see what our audience liked and what needed to be improved.
How were the narratives constructed and what part did they play in the creation of meaning and experienceof your products?
As our production was only 2 minutes long and was an opening sequence, we could not complete a full narrative theory. We chose to use the Todorov narrative theory for our production, as that was common in many sitcoms. When completing our audience research the narrative of being based in a school/college being surrounded by teenagers experiences awkward situations was the most popular. Due to this we then used this narrative in our production. When looking at sitcoms such as The Inbetweeners we found that they seem to centre the narrative of one character we then did this with our character of Emily. We emphasised this through the use of voice overs, which then produce an enigma from the audience asking questions such as "Who is Tyler?". This then allows the audience to keep questioning who Tyler is and what their relationship is like.
What kind of values and ideologies did the Production promote or attack?
When creating our production we didn't look at any values and ideologies other than stereotypes used in our product. Our two main characters both present the main stereotypes of a "geek" and "the hot guy", which can be seen as quite controversial from some people's point of view. However, by using these two stereotypes form my audience research, it is seen that my target audience want these characters, with these stereotypes. When researching into other sitcoms we found that the stereotypes are very strong, especially in the "geek". However, as the Inbetweeners was see as the most popular in my survey and the age demographic of 15-30 is the highest, the stereotypes must not attack the sitcom from a younger audience. Therefore, due to this the stereotypes used in my Production should not create a negative view in most of my demographic audience.
What issues of representations do the Productions raise?
Our products show the representation of teenager's college situations, geeks and the popular guy. When creating our production we had to look at how we would represent our location, narrative and characters. We had to be care full when creating these representations, to not make them seem negative on society today, however, we looked at the ways in which other sitcoms such as The Inbetweeners show these representations. We found that they seem to present the "geek" as the awkward and strange characters and the "popular guy" as tall, muscular man who gets all of the girls. We also noticed that narratives that are based around schools and colleges present the awkward and hilarious situations than students go through on a day to day basis. We then Incorporated these representations into our production.
How might you apply your idea to a third media platform?
If I was to apply my idea to a third media platform, I would create a poster presenting a main image of the cast and situation, with small amounts of text including "coming soon" or "the premiere date". I would include the chalk like font, as on website to state information such as the shows website. Also, when presenting the main image for the cast, I would use the pop art style on the image to emphasise the young and fun audience.
I feel that both of our production and website are very successful. Our intention was to create fun, light hearted, simple products that were conventional to E4 and attracted our audience of 15-30.
Through this feedback we found that most of our audience found the clip funny, which helped made our product for successful as the main convention of a sitcom is to create humour and escapism for the audience while allowing them to relate. Also, they particularly liked the character of the geek, which links back to our primary research as they chose to have a geek a main character. Points to improve were to add titles, including cast and title at the beginning on the programme. Also, one audience member stated that she thought it was a professional production other than amateur. She liked the simplicity of the narrative which was emphasised through the clear camera shots, such as shot reverse and establishing which introduced the characters throughout. Her favourite part of the narrative was when "Emily" fell into the bin, as she said it was very funny, this then links to the conventions of sitcoms and then creates a successful conventional production.
When completing our 3 paged website on our production we then looked at the websites of the sitcoms we researched. We found that the key codes and conventions of an E4 sitcom websites consisted of young anchorage which would relate and attract a younger audience, pages for the audience to get involved such as Facebook fan pages, quizzes and cast videos. Therefore, when creating our website, we wanted to create a fun and lively atmosphere, which would attract to our demographic of 15-30. We would include text which anchors a younger audience including phrases which are used by younger people, character profiles, with embarrassing information about the characters and videos with the cast, which would reveal their embarrassing secrets. As the narrative of our sitcom was based around the same location as The Inbetweeners, we used their website as our main inspiration. We then therefore created pop art style images on the character page, and created an extra page for more character information, while creating the idea of a school or college environment, by using a blackboard as our header background and main background as well as using chalk like fonts as used on there website. We also included a poll asking what the audience's favourite character was as well as an interview with the cast.
When asking some member's of our audience our website they particular said that would like more pages on the characters, with more information on, to get more involved with the character's life. They also suggested that we made an extra page that would present our episode on, so that the cast video is not on the same page.

Drawn Storyboard (NEW)
Here we created a hand drawn storyboard for our initial shots and the way in which the composition would be shown. However, when creating our photographic storyboard we realised that scenes such as the "getting stuck into the door" would not be possible. However, as we then only changed the narrative slightly, we were still using the same shots as before, which allowed for the storyboards to still be useful.
Here is the link to our our drawn storyboard on Charley's blog, however, everyone in the group took part in creating a section of the storyboard.

Website Video Caption (NEW)
After creating the hyperlink to the "Cast Interview" video I then produced a photo caption as on the Inbetweeners Website, to create a more eye catching and fun way to inform the audience of our latest video.
Here I am creating the caption through Photoshop by building up many different layers.
Here you can see that I have placed the caption onto the website next to the link for the video.
Website Hyperlinks (NEW)
Home Page
As we are basing our website on The Inbetweeners', I felt it was conventional to create a hyperlink to a video as they done, as well other E4 sitcoms. Therefore I have created a small caption presenting our cast interview video with language used by a younger audience. I felt that this then created a less formal and fun way to inform our audience of a new video.

Here I have inserted the pale URL to the character website under the "read more"

After looking at both of these captions, I also feel it would be conventional to E4 to present a photo with the caption such as "Funny Shizzle". I feel this will then create more of a light hearted and fun atmosphere for the audience as both colour of purple and green suggest a sense of having fun. I will use Photoshop to achieve this as it will allow me to allow up text and an image together in an eye catching and fun form.
Here I have inserted the page URL to my home page
As you can see the hyperlink has been created on the words "What our cast video now!" so our audience can now click on the link to take them to the page with the video on it.
Here the link has taken our audience to the video page where they can watch
the cast video.
Character Page
After looking at the way The Inbetweeners Website presents their character pages, we decided that it would be conventional to have a further link to more character information when clicked on by the audience. This involves a brief introduction to the characters, and then clicking on "read more" to bring up a further page with more information on such as their personal life. We have chosen to follow by this convention as we feel it allows for the audience to learn more about the characters in a fun yet informative way.

Website Character Page -Photo editing Printscreens (NEW)
After looking into the design and layout of the Inbetweeners website, I decided to create the same Pop Art style photos of the characters. I felt it was quite conventional to do this as The Inbetweeners has the same demographic as our programme and we are therefore basing our website on theirs.
Here are a few examples on the photo editing for our website
The Character of Robert
Original Image
Here I have increased the brightness and contrast in the image as well as decreasing the shadows to create a brighter image with a harsher colour spectrum. I then also added a Black and White effect along with changing the Saturation to create more of blue image.
Here I have also increased the Brightness and Contrast to create a more contrasting and Pop Art Style image. However, I did not add a Black and White effect to this image as I wanted all of the character photos to be different, as on The Inbetweeners website. Instead, I increased the Colour Temperature and added a Tint to create more colour in the image.

Costume Sketches (NEW)
When creating our costume designs we had to take into stereotypes in to consideration. After looking at The Inbetweeners and other popular sitcoms, we noticed that the stereotypes are very strong. We then applied this idea to our costume ideas to make the characters very stereotypical to society today. Also, when looking into the audience of The Inbetweeners we found that it was the most popular for people aged between 15-30. This suggests that strong stereotypes appeal to people in that age demographic.

Tree Diagram of Website Structure (NEW)
The Inbetweeners Website
To help us achieve a conventional website, I looked at "sitcom" websites with the same demographic as us, such as The Inbetweeners. I then created a tree diagram presenting the pages it contains and what they include. Although we are only creating 3 pages on our website, I felt it was more conventional and more realistic to look at the website structure with all of its pages.

Photographic Story Board (NEW)
As part of our planning Charley was given the task to create the photographic storyboard to check if the shots on the shot list needed to be changed. She also used this opportunity to test the lighting in the composition to see if it was high key or low key. She found that most shots had high key lighting which is what we wanted to use, as it is a common convention in a Situation Comedy.

Intentions (NEW)
We are going to create our own
programme and 3 paged website, which has a target audience
of 15-35 years, with the same demographics and psychographics as the E4
audience, while being suitable for a pre-watershed showing. We as a group have
decided to create a fictional production, within the genre of a Situation Comedy, by making sure we follow the codes and conventions presented in
E4 sitcoms and websites. These codes and conventions consist of narrative,
camera angles, stereotypes, mise en scene, representation and genre.
E4's demographic audience is represented in its logo. By having their logo in
purple, suggests that the institution is targeting both male and
females, and along with the bubbly style font, creating a light
hearted, young effect. I feel that this then emphasises its
younger audience as their shows are seen to be more funny and light hearted
(mainly sitcoms) compared to Channel 4.
Furthermore, when creating our website we used the E4 website as our main inspiration as their shows all share the same 15-35 aged demographic as we were given on our design brief. Also, as in our audience research on other E4 situation comedies we found that both male and females watch the shows, which was then reinforced in our surveys as our audience stated that they wanted a mixed gender cast. Due to having a mixed gender target audience we have decided to create a website that would suit both audiences and therefore, will have green as our main colour scheme as it can represent both genders. Green also connotates with being light hearted and humorous, which then could represent that the audience will feel humor and escapism when watching the show. Also, by having our show based around college life, we have decided to have green as the college's main colour. Also, we will incorporate a street/graffiti theme to our website to give it a young and urban sense of style. This idea will then be presented in our fonts and images used like on the E4 website. When analysing the E4 website we found the conventions used were character pages, with photos of each character, information on the character and a quote that they would say, along with interviews with the cast on their lives and language suited to the 15-30 demographic age. Due to having E4 as our main institution, we are going to incorporate these conventions into our website. For exmaple, on the Inbetweeners webpage, they have created their character page and then link a further page to each character to give further information, we will then include this convention on our own website to make sure we attract the same demographic. Our website will be quite a fun page, which will create lively atmosphere for young people, while creating the sense of a school/college life and the situations that you come across in teenage years.
By completing my audience research I have found that my target
audience is based at 15-30 year olds, both male and female from looking at both
the viewing figures and ratings on IMBD for both The Inbetweeners and
The IT Crowd. Therefore as both these two programmes are Situation Comedies we
took these figures to influence our decision on creating our target
audience. Also, by looking at the Social Networking Fan Pages for both
these Sitcoms, we have found that the audience seem to be quite encouraged,
about the narratives, characters and the comedy of the shows. This then
suggested to us that we should look into the what the audience like
about their favourite sitcoms and what they would like to be included in our
own.
When targeting our age bracket of 15-30
we must pay attention to the class system as it can impact on the way we target
our audience. We then therefore intend to target 15-30 year
olds in the social classes of B,C1.C2 and D ranging from high middle class to
lower working class, due to being the social classes in which E4 aim
their programmes at. Due to our programme being set in a state college in the
middle of Camden Town and the characters being in this class range,
we are then meeting those social classes, which will cause
the audience to relate to the characters and situations
more realistically.
By creating our own situation comedy, we decided to complete
primary research into our audience to find out what their
favourite situation comedies were. As we only asked people in our
demographic range of 15-30 we received results that would be helpful
into creating our show based on what the audience enjoy. By then
analysing the most popular "sitcoms" we then had a range of genre codes
and conventions that we would have to use in our show. One of the
main conventions was a serious narrative made funny, so we
then asked our target audience which situations they would
prefer than others. From these results we then decided to create a college
based "sitcom" that would present all of
the embarrassing school memories that everyone in our demographic has
gone through, causing the show to be relatable. Also, my getting the
target audience to choose some of our characters and to state what
they like and dislike about Situation Comedies, we can create a
sitcom that hopefully reaches what the audience want. One of these characters was the "geek", as in our primary audience research with both a survey and focus group the character of the "geek" was seen most popular. This may have been linked to the Inbetweeners character of "Will" as the show was also seen as the most popular sitcom in our research. Therefore, due to our research the narrative will be based around a "geek"character as college experiencing all of those embarrassing memories in which the audience can relate to.

Overall, I intend to create a 2 minute clip and a 3 paged website based on our Situation Comedy aimed at both men and women aged between 15-30. I will follow the codes and conventions shown in popular E4 sitcoms and will apply then to my clip, to create a successful, exciting and humorous new sitcom. My website will also contain the typical codes and conventions used on the E4 sites, which will then help attract the same demographic with a bold, vibrant and interactive website.

The Final Script (NEW)
After beginning to film our sitcom we began to feel as if some of the actions and dialogue that were taking place, did not reach the conventions of a Situation Comedy. Due to this we have taken out some of the actions and dialogue to make the episode seem more realistic to our target audience, causing it to flow better and then therefore look and sound more attractive.
This is our final script.

Shot List Changes (NEW)
When filming and creating our photographic storyboards, we found that some of our shots could be deleted or had to be slightly changed. This was because some shots did not follow the conventions of a situation comedy and also did not follow composition rules such as head room and the 180 degree rule. Therefore by changing and reducing our shots we have managed to created a more flowing and conventional piece of work that allows for the audience to understand the narrative of the episode.
Final Font Used
After asking a class of 16 students we found that 12/16 students preferred the font "Postinkantaja Job" and said that we should use that on our website as it is quite a fun font which gives a sense of a scrapbook affect like in schools, while still creating quite a street effect.
Due to the overall agreement of the students we will use this font as our main header font on our website.

Possible fonts used for Website
After completing our Primary Product Research we found that if a product is based at a younger audience the fonts and colours used should also represent that audience. Therefore I searched on http://www.dafont.com/ for many fonts in the style of what we wanted. As by looking at E4's website we decided to make our website quite graffiti and street themed as it represents a younger person. Therefore we chose to the look on the distorted styles of font and found our favourite five. However, as our programme is based around a college we want to create the idea that our font suggests a young style in a learning environment.
